Anthony G White

Anthony White is an art historian with expertise in modern and contemporary art. Among his published works are books, book chapters, and journal articles, as well as papers, reviews, exhibitions, conferences, media and more.

His book publications include Italian Modern Art in the Age of Fascism (Routledge, 2020), Lucio Fontana: Between Utopia and Kitsch (MIT Press, 2011), Variations: A More Diverse Picture of Contemporary Art (with Tristen Harwood and Grace McQuilten, Monash University Publishing, 2023) and Art as Enterprise: Social and Economic Engagement in Contemporary Art (with Grace McQuilten, IB Tauris, 2016). Among his edited books are Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles (National Gallery of Australia, 2002) and Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism: The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection (National Gallery of Australia, 2001).

His writing appears in the journals Grey Room, October and Third Text and in anthologies published by Cambridge University Press, Fordham University Press and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also been a contributor to Artforum, the world's leading contemporary art magazine.

He has received research awards from the Australian Research Council, The Ian Potter Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Mellon Foundation, and led research collaborations with art industry organisations The Dax Centre and Arts Project Australia. 

Currently Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne, where he is Head of Art History and Art Curatorship and Deputy Director of the Australian Institute of Art History, he has held visiting appointments at New York University, at The Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts in Washington D.C., and at Australian National University. He was formerly President of the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand and Curator of International Painting and Sculpture at the National Gallery of Australia.
